Built by an entrepreneur, for entrepreneurs.
I started BlackHill because I know what it's like to be in your shoes. Clear answers, fixed prices, no legalese. So you can stop worrying about the legal stuff and get back to building.
Our Story - The Lawyer I Wish I Had
I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. But I didn't think I had the right stuff. No cash, no network, no connections, and no "big idea." So I went to business school and got an MBA, figuring that would fill in the gaps.
Then I actually tried to start a business. And I got buried. LLC vs. corporation. Banking. QuickBooks. S Corp elections. Contracts, terms and conditions, privacy policies. I had no idea what I was doing, and I didn't have the money to hire lawyers and accountants to help me figure it out.
So I went to law school.
I spent the next decade working mostly for private equity firms and doing work with startups, mainly helping them raise money through crowdfunding. It was an interesting niche, but the work felt transactional. I didn't feel like I was having an impact on real humans. My services felt like a commodity.
I believe the only way to have a real impact is to affect a person in a human way. Not like a number on a spreadsheet, but real help that touches their livelihood, their family, and their future. A lot of lawyers go to law school with these kinds of ideals. Too many of us lose them along the way. I did too.
So I had a sit-down with myself. I realized I wanted to get back to my entrepreneurial roots and have a real impact on real people. I wanted to help entrepreneurs and small business owners who are building something from nothing, just like I was. I wanted to be the lawyer I wish I had when I was starting out.
I don't have all the answers yet. But I'm building this firm on principles and values that are personally important to me.
Blackhill's Values
Champion the Underdog
You don't need to be VC-backed to deserve great legal counsel. Whether you're a first-time founder, a side hustler, an immigrant entrepreneur, or a Main Street business, you deserve a real shot. That's who we built this for.
Clarity Over Complexity
The system is designed to favor people who are already winning. We fight against that and help you use it to your advantage. If you don't understand what we did and why, we failed.
Confidence, Not Dependence
The goal isn't to make you need us forever. It's to make you feel like your business is handled, you have a plan, and you can focus on what matters. You should walk away informed, empowered, and unburdened.
Find the Yes
Bad lawyers list all the reasons something won't work. We find solutions and creative alternatives. We are problem solvers, not gatekeepers.
Make It Enjoyable
Nobody likes working with their law firm. We want to flip that. Something traditionally boring and stressful should feel good. You should leave calls feeling pumped, not anxious.
We Hate Bullies
We don't use our law license to intimidate smaller players or crush weaker competitors. If you have a legitimate claim, we'll represent you hard. But we're not the firm you hire to make someone fold just because you're bigger. We protect you from bullies, and we won't become one.
Community - Rooted in Utah's Business Community
Our office sits in the heart of Silicon Slopes, Utah's thriving business corridor. We're not just serving this community; we're part of it.
We understand the realities of running a business, the pressures of growth, and the opportunities unique to Utah. But we also love helping entrepreneurs across the country and around the world. We're here to support you every step of the way.
